Studio Madhouse has been flying under the radar for some time. And while it has always been known to anime fans as a legendary studio. Producing some of the most memorable anime of all time like Hunter X Hunter andOne Punch Man. But in the past few years, Studio Madhouse has been going under the radar. And it looks like that is all about to change this year. With the coming of the Overlord movie and season 4 of Overlord coming in 2022. As well as their newest and most interesting anime for some time called Sonny Boy.
Of course, the studio Madhouse decline is understandable with studio Mappa taking its place. Studio Mappa being founded by Masao Maruyama, one of the main founders and former producers of studio Madhouse. This does tell us that Madhouse has lost one of its founding members and with Studio Mappa in the limelight with shows like Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen under their belt. It looks like Masao Maruyama was a big loss for Studio ‘Madhouse.
While Madhouse might be feeling the loss of Masao Maruyama. It doesn’t mean that they are down for the count. And Sonny Boy, Madhouse’s newest anime, proves this. The studio itself posted the first episode of Sonny Boy on Youtube, 2 weeks before it even appeared on television. And the reception to the first episode was overwhelmingly positive. The story itself had everyone intrigued and the animation style reminded people of the retro style of animation. Almost giving the anime a certain painting type feel to it.
The first episode of Sonny Boy gives us a vague understanding of what has happened to a middle school. Dropping the viewers into the middle of a scene without showing how or why a whole school and its students have been transported into another dimension. Showing the school and its students in nothing but a pitch black atmosphere. On top of which, in this new world some students have also been given superpowers. This strange incident becomes even stranger as the episode goes on. With some students creating rules to survive in the school, while some are going around abusing their superpowers. And a few students trying to figure out where exactly they are and what has exactly happened to them.
With the first episode ending on such a high note. Fans are expecting this to be studio Madhouse’s next legendary anime. Of course, this will all depend on how the whole season goes but if the first episode is any indicator, then we might be seeing one of the best anime of all time. With Shingo Natsume who is also known for working on Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and season 1 of One Punch Man, at the helm of the anime it is bound to be one of the best anime of the year if not of all time.
