The world of technology has no shortage of investors willing to bet on new technologies that have the potential to become the future of all things gaming and tech. Recently, it was announced that the founder and owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dan Gilbert, has formed a partnership Bruin Sports Capital and WPP and the partnership, based on a fund on $35 million, will invest in tech and media startups that will focus on sports.
For those of you who do not know, this is not going to be Gilbert’s first step into the world of investments and startup businesses and his portfolio of investments include Detroit Venture Partners as well. This fund is also interested in projects related to eSports, and this is a very huge deal, especially if you consider the fact that worldwide interest in eSports has been expanding rapidly as more people become interested in professionalized and organized gaming tournaments.
Detroit Venture Partners’ other investors, Vasu Kulkarni and Deepen Parikh said that the new venture, Courtside Ventures, is going to be entirely separate from the group’s other investments and that the Courtside arrangement is also going to look for opportunities in the eSports industry, particularly in hosting tournaments and back end services such as organizing and streaming services.
It is services like Twitch which have sparked interests of players worldwide to participate and follow various events and tournaments from the professional gaming world. To put it simply, it is now a big deal, much like watching the Superbowl or the NBA Playoff finals and now eSports also have a place of their own in the minds and hearts of people.
Kulkarni also mentioned the fact that their Courtside venture is already in the process of securing an investment in the eSports industry and while he has not revealed details on what the new project is going to be, he added that this is going to help them mark their territory on the face of the eSports world. He added that they will announce more details soon.
